Synopsis:
Proposals in a romantic comedy by Neil Simon. It follows the life and relationships of the Hines family as seen through the eyes of their housekeeper, Clemma. The setting is outside of a cabin in the Pocono Mountains in the 1950’s.
There are 4 female roles and 5 male roles.
Female:
Clemma Diggins: 35- 60. Clemma is the “glue” that holds the Hines family together. She is a strong , caring woman. African American
Josie Hines: 18-30. Josie is the daughter of the family. She is strong but has troubles with relationships. She is still dealing with her parent’s divorce while being involved in a romantic triangle herself
Annie Robbins: 35-55. Josie’s mother. Returned fromto visit her ex-family and to try to repair some relationships.
Sammii: 18-30. A local girl. Beautiful but not very bright.
Male:
Burt Hines: 35-55. Josie’s father. He still in love with his ex-wife and trying to teach his daughter about growing up.At the start of the play, Burt has already had one heart attack and is suffering from “ill health”
Kenny Norman: 20-30. At the beginning of the play, Josie breaks off her engagement to Kenny but he is not going to let the relationship end that way. He is one of the people involved in the love triangle. A college student and the brightest in his class
Ray Dolenz: 20-30. The third leg of the triangle. He is Kenny’s best friend and had a summer romance a few years ago with Josie. He is a college student and a works as a golf pro at the local country club.
Vinnie Bavasi: 20-35. Vinnie met Josie at a dance in Florida and now has come to visit. He is stereotypical New York mafia. New York accent
Lewis Barnett: 35-60. Clemma’s long lost, shiftless husband returned to repair and renew the relationship. African American
